Our Curriculum Statement

Our Curriculum

At Cusgarne School, our curriculum is driven by our vision to ‘make the most of every moment’. We provide a happy, safe and inclusive environment where pupils are at the heart of all we do, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally.

Our curriculum is broad, balanced and ambitious, ensuring pupils know more, remember more and make meaningful connections over time. A strong emphasis is placed on connecting knowledge within and across subjects, so that learning is relevant, embedded and purposeful.

In the Early Years, we provide an enabling environment guided by Development Matters, where rich continuous provision develops independence, curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Across the school, we use a spiral curriculum approach where possible, revisiting key knowledge and skills so pupils deepen their understanding over time.

Curriculum Drivers

We follow ASPIRE's curriculum drivers, which are embedded throughout our curriculum and underpin our approach to teaching and learning. These drivers are used alongside our school values, which are woven through all aspects of school life and support pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.

Reading sits at the heart of our curriculum, alongside the explicit teaching of vocabulary across all subjects. Through carefully-planned learning experiences, pupils develop a strong understanding of both their local environment and the wider world, enabling them to make connections, value diversity and understand their role as responsible citizens.

We enrich learning through topic-based experiences, outdoor learning and community links, ensuring learning is engaging, relevant and rooted in both local context and global awareness.

From September 2026, we are excited to introduce our Aspire Small Schools Curriculum, enhancing our topic-based approach to further boost engagement while maintaining strong subject knowledge and clear progression.

Impact

Pupils leave Cusgarne as confident, reflective and well-rounded learners, with strong knowledge, positive attitudes and a deep understanding of themselves, their local community and the wider world, ready for the next stage of their education and life.
