Robin Class

Robin Class (EYFS-KS1)

Hello and welcome to our Class page!

Robin Class is a mixed Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 class taught by Mrs Turner and Mrs Denton, our Early Years specialist.  We are lucky to be supported by Mr Barnard, Mrs Buckley, and Mrs Northey in the afternoons.

Our classroom is big, bright, and bursting with energy!  The children quickly settle into our Class family and together we explore, learn new skills and enjoy our time at school.

Each term we have a topic and base our learning around this either through teacher directed or child-initiated activities.  Every day, we start with a class wake and shake activity before settling into our lessons.

Year 1 and 2 children follow the National Curriculum and Reception children then work towards their Early Learning goals.  More detailed information can be found on our curriculum pages of the website.

Within our classroom we have a role play area, creative areas, writing tables, a fun reading area and lots of construction toys!  Outside our classroom we have our dedicated outdoor learning area which includes a stage, water wall, muddy kitchen and lots of other outdoor learning resource.  During the year we have opportunities to use bikes and scooters and make use of the lovely big field next to our classroom.

In Robin Class, PE is on a Monday and Friday afternoon.  We may use the hall for indoor PE, using the indoor PE equipment, but we try to go outside whenever possible either in the playground or the field. Children keep their PE kits in school, and these are returned home at the end of each term.

The past couple of years have been slightly different with regards to school trips, but we are hoping this year to enjoy school trips again. Recently we competed in the Cornwall Music Festival, last year we visited Newquay Zoo, and in the past we have also enjoyed visits to the beach, lifeboat station, the Minack Theatre and The Eden Project.  Notification of any trips will be sent via email, and the children always have a fantastic time!

We love to read and share stories in Robin Class. The children read regularly, and we ask that parents support reading at home by sharing some time together every day.  Parents should listen to their child read daily for at least 10 minutes and record this, with any notes, in their reading record. To encourage fluency, consolidation and comprehension we expect children to read a book twice before they are changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All children have a copy of the Vipers reading scheme in the back of their reading records, and we encourage you to look at these questions & ask a selection to your child after listening to them read. Vipers highlights the 6 key areas of the reading domain, and are there to help prompt your child so that they can improve their comprehension of texts.

Daily phonics sessions take place in the morning for all children in Robin class and we develop our phonics skills in preparation for our Phonics Screening Check which takes place in the Summer Term.

Year 1 children will have weekly spellings and regular homework tasks, and the Year 2 will also have the same but with the addition of times tables set via Google Classroom. Times tables for the Year 2 children will be tested on a Friday morning.   Regular homework assignments to be completed at home are posted on Google Classroom on a Thursday, and need to be handed in via Google Classroom by the following Wednesday.

Throughout the year, you can keep up to date via our school bulletin, our regular posts on Twitter or Facebook.

As always, if you have any questions, please make contact via email on hello@cusgarne.org or telephone our secretaries- Mrs Sleeman and Mrs Hall.
