EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage

Children in our Reception year are welcomed into Robin class and work towards the Early Learning Goals in the seven areas of learning set out in the EYFS curriculum.

The Prime areas are:

  •          Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  •          Communication and Language
  •          Physical Development

The Specific areas are:

  •          Literacy
  •          Mathematics
  •          Understanding the World
  •          Expressive Arts and Design

We use a blend of teacher directed activities and child initiated activities;  and take every opportunity to encourage exploration and develop the broad range of skills and knowledge that provide a solid foundation for future learning.

Our children have access to a continuous provision such as a creative area, sand area and writing tables both indoors and outdoors.  We resource these areas to enable the children to make progress in all areas of learning and they are linked to our topics and the children’s interests to keep them inviting.

At Cusgarne, we teach Phonics daily using Letters and Sounds, and draw upon a range of interactive activities to consolidate learning and embed knowledge.  Your child will also have a reading book alongside a reading record where we encourage parents and children to sit and read a book together.  The children also enjoy a weekly library session where they can choose a book to share at home.

We use observational assessment to understand your child’s learning and progress and to identify their next steps of learning.  We use Tapestry to allow us to compile a complete picture of your child’s progress in a Learning Journal.

Our motto at Cusgarne is ‘make the most of every moment’ and this begins as soon as you are allocated a place at our school!  You and your child will be invited along to meet us and we will arrange some transition times in class before the start of the Autumn Term.  Throughout the year parents and families are invited to our numerous events such as assemblies, Harvest Assembly, productions, Sports Day, parent meetings and open afternoons.

Since Robin class is a mixed Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 class, transition into Year 1 is seamless.  The children are taught by Mrs Turner and Mrs Denton ensuring that a bond is made and this continues into Year 1.  The children are confident finding their way around the classroom and are ready to move onto the next stage of their school journey.  For more about our class structure, please see our class pages.
